Dozens killed in fire after escape attempt at Colombian prison

Dozens of prisoners were killed and injured during a failed escape attempt from a detention center in Colombia, according to officials.

A spokesman for the country’s prison administration (INPEC) told AFP that at least 49 inmates perished in a fire following the attempted escape.

Several inmates reportedly set fire to their mattresses in the medium-security prison, sparking a riot, as reported by the local media.

It is anticipated that the number of casualties from the incident in Tuluá, southwest Colombia, will increase.

Iván Duque, the departing president of Colombia, confirmed the tragedy on Twitter without providing further details.
